Building, Breaking and Rebuilding: Inside the Robotics Studio

The robotics studio is never quiet. Motors whir, a 3D printer hums, and a small group of students leans over a half-assembled chassis, arguing about gear ratios. Nothing here is finished for long.

Every build begins with a problem the team has chosen for itself: move a game piece faster, lift a heavier load, or make the machine reliable enough to survive a full day of competition. Students sketch, prototype, test and then rebuild — keeping a log of what failed and why.

At competition, the team learns a different lesson. Matches are short, opponents are unpredictable, and the pit crew has minutes to diagnose a fault. Students rotate roles so that everyone learns to drive, repair and explain the machine.

Back at school, the work continues. Younger students join the studio, older ones mentor them, and the next iteration begins before the trophies have been packed away.
